Storage Basket

Description:

Rigid, square shaped, coiled basket, with partially imbricated, red and white, geometric design. Straight sides flare from narrow base., height: 9 1/2"; Diameter: 13",

Cultural Narrative:

This basket is from a Northwest Coast maker; a Klickitat maker. This basket is an unusual shape because it is in the shape of an oval and it comes up to a wide-mouth on the top. It must be for some sort of serving or storage. It has the usual diamond-geometric designs with vertical lines. I think dyed bear grass has been used to make the design on this. But it is so finely woven. It looks Coastal because of that color. Ours are usually a little darker. Yeah, we don’t find too much yellow. Maybe it was in a trade or something. Vivian Adams, Marlene Simlaw
