Caption on image: Pioneer Printing Office Lapwai. The Spalding mission was built in 1836 in Lapwai (later renamed Spalding) by Henry Harmon Spalding to bring Christianity to the Nez Perce Indians. Chief Joseph, father of the now famous Chief Joseph, was one of the first two Nez Perce baptized into Christianity at this church.
